Once you've eliminated the other options to your oil leak and feel for sure
it's the main seal here are some lessons learned from when I replaced the rear
main sela on my 235. Hope it helps.

I replaced the rear main seal in my 235 about 6 months ago and I'll
give you
my lessons learned. I'm sure there are different ways to approach it.

Removed the oil pan and transmission. Reason for removing the tranny
was
that I dropped the crank just a small amount - this makes the removal
and
installation of the upper portion of the seal much easier. I was going
to
remove the tranny anyway for maintenance, cleaning, painting, etc.
Once pan
and tranny removed, I removed the rear bearing cap and loosened all the
other caps just enough for the crank to drop slightly. When you buy a
sneaky pete (usually available at your LAPS) it comes with a tool that
looks
similar to a small auger. This did an ok job of removal, however I
also
took a small diameter welding rod and rapped electrical tape around the
end
to prevent scratching and tapped into the seal groove. This did a good
job
in removing all remnants of the seal.

Once the seal was removed I replaced the lower seal in the bearing cap
(fairly easy operation). Then took the upper seal and lubricated it
with a
light coat of vaseline. Snaked the sneaky pete (tool with handle,
cable and
clip) around the upper seal groove on the crank, attached the end to
the end
of the seal to the clip on the sneaky pete and pulled it through. One
trick
is to do it in one motion - don't jerk or stop. It goes in relatively
easy
with a smooth firm motion. Another thing I learned was not to drop the
crank very far. It creates an opening too large and the seal will not
seat
properly in the groove. It was a lot of work but it is doable and it
virtually stopped all leaking I was getting from the main seal.

I too, have a mid-50's 235 that leaks from around the front of the oil pan.
I have been told there is an oil galley there that is notorious for
cracking. So far we have sealed the leak with silicon but obviously not a
permanent fix. If anyone has any ideas, please share.
