I've been using straight mineral spirits for over 16 years in my standard shop parts cleaners with AC electric fluid pumps. I buy it by the gallon jugs when they are on sale at the hardware store or wherever. We are not especially careful around the things and haven't set them on fire yet. Fresh mineral spirits (aka paint thinner) can be a little rough on the hands. It will dry the skin quickly. I switched over to M/S just because its easy to find, fairly cheap, and works like a charm. One cleaner is basically a large open vat with a grate and if you have a habit of leaving the lid open, the M/S has a tendancy to evaporate. The other is a standard "Safety Clean" barrel with basin type and the small drain hole in the basin keeps the evaporation almost unnoticeable. The Safety Clean unit has a "fusible link" in the lid that is supposed to melt and allow the lid to slam shut in case of fire.
Just my experiences. Gunk works pretty good but I can only find it in spray cans. What do you guys use in your parts cleaners? Sumguy mentioned varsol but says you gotta cut it with something and I am also concerned about using a flammable liquid in a parts cleaner with an AC electric motor.
