Here in Ann Arbor we have quite a few intersections where there appear to be cameras above the traffic signals, but they're actually motion detectors. The traffic signal controllers are set so that flow on the primary street is not interrupted unless there are vehicles waiting at the light on the cross road. The RF motion detectors are more reliable than the older inductive coils embedded in the pavement. Ever been stuck at a light on a motorcycle, sitting over an embedded coil that wouldn't sense you? I have. Honest officer, I HAD to run that red light . . .
