I'll witness Thunder's third gear from a dead start capabilities, taking
off
from a stoplight.......uphill, no less. She never blinked!

Matt,
Just remember guys, that 400HP will be gutless anyway... up to 3500rpm
or even 4000.
Why? Any engine, but especially an Olds, can be built to provide a big,
*flat* torque curve and still pull high RPM power.
Thunder's 468 can be driven around all day in 3rd gear (direct drive,
like a one-speed) in her B&M manual only TH400 and not care one bit.
There's a handful of Olds List members who have now experienced that.
That's enough low end torque to sell. A small block Olds can do something
similar. It's all in how the engine is built. Gearing helps too, but in
direct drive, the torque difference betwwen a 3.08 and a 4.1 isn't all
that much. A 4.1 in direct drive is about like a 3.08 with a very weak
second gear in an automatic and a weak 3rd gear in a 4-speed. The engine
torque does all the rest.
