List, we need to bombard this jerk and edicate him. Chris is correct. He's stooooopid. He either won't go to the websites Chris gave him to learn the facts, or he doesn't have the patience to read them. His response to my comments:

"What's your question? I just got thru going back and fourth with some guy over this same topic. He sent me every link on GOOGLE about a TH400 and not one of them says the TH400 is a 3spd. Can you back up your allegation? The car was called 4-4-2 for that reason, I thought. Is that wrong also?"

My response to the idiot that I just sent through eBay:

"If you don't believe me, look in any GM shop manual from 1965 to 1976. The transmission section will tell you that a TH400 is a 3-speed automatic. In 1964, the first year for the 442, the emblem stood for 4 = 4-barrel, 4 = 4-speed manual transmission, and 2 = dual exhaust. Starting in the 1965 Olds model year, the designation changed to 4 = 400 cubic inch engine, 4 = 4-barrel, and 2 = dual exhaust. That's the way it is. You can't change the history."

These people who have too big an ego to admit they might be wrong and be willing to read and learn is beyond me.

Question for item #4638425696 - Oldsmobile : 442THANKS, BUT MY LISTING DOES NOT say that the TRANS is an OVERDRIVE trans.
=============================
... Chris Replies:
I quote the ad:
'TRANS: This is a T400, 4-speed automatic transmission. The trans. is all there, it hasn’t been refreshed, but is still functional as is... '
.....
This says to me that the trans is the original trans to the car. That would be a TH400. I have never heard of a "T400" before. 'TH 400' or 'TH400' is the common abbreviation for GM's Turbo-Hydramatic 400, which the AT versions of the 1968 442 used. As did pretty much every other Big Block GM application in the pre-Overdrive age.
...
The TH400 is a **3** speed trans
That is such very common knowledge I cannot even believe anyone can possibly assert otherwise.
...
So, you are claiming now that the trans is a 4-speed [which it is NOT].... but one of those gears is _not_ Overdrive? Please explain this phenonemon to me. I have never heard of a 4-spd AT that does not have overdrive, except perhaps the Slim-Jim trans of the 1950's.

A TH400 is a 4spd trans.
=================
Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzt
Not a chance in hell.
Time to brush up on your tranny facts. See below. I fwd'd this to the Olds email list so they can 'learn you up' as well.

These are not electronically shifted either;
===================
Bzzzzzzzt.
Wrong again.... how much did you lose on this bet, sir?
The TH350 trans is downshifted upon WOT ['detent'] via a cable mechanism; the TH400 and TH425 and Jetaway 2-speed transes of the era use an ELECTRICAL SIGNAL to detent the trans into Super or passing gear upon execution of Wide Open Throttle. Here's a switch that a 1969 Cutlass uses to do just that:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4638470378&ssPageName=STRK:MESO:IT

not until the mid-90's when the 4L60Es and 4L80Es were they electronically shifted.
===================
Perhaps I misused the term "shifted"
The correct term I guess is "detent" or the DOWNSHIFT or kickdown feature.
The important thing in that respect is that the TH400 trans uses electricity and not a cable.
And, that the TH400 is a *****THREE SPEED**** trans.

Where'd you get your info from?
======================
Huh, ditto, sir. Let's see your list.
...
I got my info from
-Chassis Service Manuals as put forth by the factory engineers. I have about 30 bookshelf feet of them.
-Experience at a trans shop as a certified mechanic
-Years of general mechanincal experience
-reading all manner of Chilton's, Haynes, Motor's, etc. manuals
-Rebuilding various transes such as TH350, TH400, Ford C6, etc.
-Any and all literature every printed concering the TH400 trans.
-GM technical service bulletins
-Mitchell Manuals covering every US made trans of the era.
-1000's of car oriented magazines over the last oh 30 years or so.
...
here's a quick list of GOOGLE search sites on the TH400
Please point out to me where any one of them shows the **4** speeds of the TH400.

How refreshing to see a 442 advertised on ebay that ACTUALLY IS a 442!!! FYI- the TH400 is NOT a 4-speed or overdrive trans as your ad asserts, might want to change that. It's a 3-speed just like the TH350 but much stronger. And electrically downshifted.
