I can't get as technical as some.
A balancer simply absorbs rotational torque and dampens its vibration threw
the the rubber compound that connects the crankshaft flange to the outer
weight.
The weight part of it is used to externally balance the crank shaft.
Hope that helps.

Subject: Harmonic Balancers

Hello all-

I was reading a post on realoldspower.com and, in light of my own goof ups
and confusion, decided to post.

What does a harmonic balancer do? I'm guessing it's there to help dampen
vibration from minute differences in weight in the reciprocating assembly.

    Am I wrong?

For my 350 project, I erroniously believed that a 350 balancer was the same
as a 307 balancer and got a 307 balancer. The 307 balancer is all steel. My

'70 350 balancer has a thin strip of rubber between a loop of metal and the
base.

On the 307, how does a solid steel balancer dampen anything? Will I kill
my 350 by using a 307 balancer?

I also have a '55 324 whose balancer's rubber ring is shot. They made two
different balancers that year and mine, according to Fusick's, is
un-rebuildable. One person on this list who used to race Gen-1 V-8's (who I
aproached for advice) has informed me that he ran engines without the
balancer ring without troubles.

A '70 W-31 350, supposedly a nearly perfectly built, blueprinted, and
balanced engine, has a *larger* balancer than a stock 350. Eh? I
understand that they were built to spin higher, but what does the size of
the balancer have to do with anything?

What am I missing?
