Up untill the c5 corvette the fastest car ever produced by GM was the V6 gran national, so much for the theory that a muscle car has to have a V8! I'll argue that untill your blue in the face, that car is a muscle car in every sense of the word. What is not a muscle car is the ss monte carlo of the mid 80's. One car had the ss name and "pretty" stripes the other was just plain balls  to the wall! All with air conditioning, power windows and a somewhat plush interior.  A few mods to the grand national will put it into the elevens all without a ton of investment.  Steven

Hello all-

We could argue forever about a precise definition of a musclecar.

I've always differentiated "muscle" from "sports," so no Corvette is a
musclecar. I also have thought that a true musclecar needed to be available
in a a 4dr version of the same body platform. All of the early version
musclecars were A bodies and had a 4dr equivalent...I'm not sure if this is
true of of later models. This knocks out Mustangs (not sure if it has
already been eliminated by the "sports" car clause). It would also
eliminate every version of the Toronado.

Speaking of the Toronado, rear wheel drive needs to be a requirement.

V-8 is a requirement.

Tbe a "true" musclecar, it needs to be a "classic." But then we're stuck
with trying to pin a date on things. I can't remember when Dodge or Ford
de-tuned thier engines to meet with emissions requirements, but I don't
think anything GM after 1972 would really qualify.

As for the Quad 442 Calais? It's a quick car that might hold it's own in a
race against a true musclecar, but it is not in the same class as a
musclecar, being a transverse mounted 4cyl. front wheel drive vehicle, and
it is not the same CLASS as a musclecar.
