Kevin, are you sure it doesn't say "until you slide the lever all the
way to "OFF" _and_ turn off the ignition"? On my '70 Supreme the
compressor clutch would stay engaged until the ignition was turned off,
and from what I remember the Owners Manual stated the same - the
ignition must be turned off to release the compressor clutch. I didn't
like that, so I installed a toggle switch to disengage the clutch when I
turned the AC off. I can check my '70 manual when I get home, but I'm
very sure I remember correctly.
