Subject: Frame Decode

Recently on the list I recall a frame # being decoded
39ZXXXXX where the 3= Olds and 9=1969.
Is this right?
Is there a frame code published somewhere?
====================================
Frames have a part number typically on the LH side of the LR frame rail
This matches the PN's published in the PN manuals on paper and/or CD

you DO have a PN manual, do you not?

Get the CD if you do not have one. CHEAP and very handy. Be 'the dealer'.

Now, since way back at least 1966, the factory also stamped the VIN derivative into the frame.

On the '66 442 I helped restore we found it readily after snadblast of the frame- 2 places, top of LH rail in the area of the LR axle kickup. Alas, I failed to take photos of that feature.

On the '70 frame I just had blasted and painted

why it needs a frame:

The VIN stamp was found in 2 places, on the LH SIDE of the LH frame rail, about 10" fwd, and again about 10" aft, of the body mtg bolt located at the front seat area. About center of the 2-dr door.

see that and more discussion here, including FIREWALL VIN STAMPS pix:

The VIN Dervivative in the pre-73 era anyhow is the entire thing, minus the 4 body style digits

EG, if my car's VIN is 344678M100123 [and it is, exc. for the last 6 digits]
then the engine, trans, and frame were stamped "38M100123" accordingly
With the body style part "4467" being left off for some reason. Perhaps there was only ONE car EVER made with "100123" as the final 6, so whatever its body was, is what it was. The derivative contains:
Olds division
Year of issue
Plant of build
Vehicle sequential number.

Apparently that was enough.
