I realize you have a trusted mechanic who has a history with your Olds, but I also go to one who has worked wonders for my '72 (as well as my old '85 diesel Volvo, '01 Ram, '04 Volvo, '98 Maxima, '48 CJ2a, '66 Dart, etc...) He's an honest guy with a good group working for him. Specifically, he has fixed a few A/C woes I've encountered with both R12 and R134 systems in all but the CJ2a I had.
Hit me offlist and I'll give you his info...but like most places, he'll probably want to take a look at it before committing to what's wrong. I'm not affiliated with him in any way...just a happy customer.

8/02, hubby reported the fan belts squealing badly
with poor acceleration on hard acceleration.
11/99 at 112K mi., A/C compressor frozen and looks
like all was replaced/recharged, including belt.
Shows 60.00 (ounces???).
