Advance Auto first said they couldn't get a cable for my car, but when
presented with the SKU number you gave me, 3925188, the thing came right
up on their screen. Ordered it in overnight for $19.88, and it fits
fine. Not exactly the same thing as original but did not require any
modification to make it fit.

This is the '69-72 TH350 Cutlass Cable that runs from detent linkage in
trans to the FIREWALL and GAS PEDAL, not to the carb like later models.
Info from the box:

Made in Israel
CA-1950

Barcode # 18426
Sku# 3925188 mfg# 04210
Another barcode label has # 109966170

Sounds like the info in my database.
Now, here's another issue. When attached to the detent linkage coming
from the transmission, you can pull the cable out and it does not pull
back....acts like the spring has snapped or maybe the linkage came loose
internally. Might have done this by overextending it while trying to
get my old cable freed up. What would you say is my next best
move....drop the pan and look around?
Thanks again,
Bob

Ayep, you will need to drop the pan.
I assume you carefully ensured that the cable end is correctly engaged with
the link in the trans hole?
