Subject: Re: Final drive ratio

(if a posi/limited slip rear)count how many times the yoke for the
driveshaft on the rear turns for one full 360degree turn of the
wheel/brakedrum/rotor(not sure what is on the rear). You can do this by
yourself if the rear is off the ground a little.
================
correct, one turn of each drive wheel = 2 full wheel turns = one full turn of the ring gear.

If the rear is "not" a posi/limited slip rear, you will
need someone to go on the drivers side of the rear and turn the wheel to keep
up with the side you are turning.
================
That is one way to attain 2 full wheel turns, but it involves a lot of "babysitting" or careful attenton to exact behavior that is simply not necessary. Like I said, the carrier does not care if you provide it 1 turn of each of 2 wheels, or 2 turns of 1 wheel or 0.5 of one and 1.5 of the other, as long as they ADD UP TO 2 full wheel turns. With the open diff, it is _far easier_ to keep one wheel stationary, no babysitting needed there, and just get your 2 turns off the one elevated wheel. If you ever see a cutaway differential in action, you will instanly grasp why this is so, as the spider gears walk around each other, turning the carrier at 1/2 the speed of the one rotating axle [while one axle is held still of course]. At least, that did it for me.

If you just turn the one side of the rear without someone turning the other wheel to keep up ...you will not get an accurate reading at all.
=================
Not true.
you just need to ensure that you get TWO FULL DRIVE WHEEL TURNS
one on each side = two [the posi method, or a PITA for open diffs]
Two on one side = two [the easy non-posi method]
0.1 on one side and 1.9 on other side = 2 but what a PITA.

Its sounds more confusing than it is.....

agreed
I tried to generalize the text to apply to 4WD and FWD vehicles, too
"final drive ratio" applies to Toro's as well as RWD cars. "rear end ratio" does not.
