We did a little bit of experimentation with MogileFS but performance was
horrendous at the time. Other than NFS, we haven't really tested any other
distributed FS. If you do succeed in getting some other distributed FS to
work, we'd be happy to incorporate your work.

Having said that, at what scale are you running to notice that NFS is the
bottleneck? Using NFS v3 we have run upto 10000 users with the PHP
implementation. I notice that Oracle has taken down the Sun Blueprints that
we had published detailing the tuning of that config. If someone has a copy,
perhaps they can post it.
