/etc/inittab is set to runlevel 5, and Sugar starts in the simulator.
But once in Sugar, I can't get a command prompt, and don't know how to
start any X program.
Any help is appreciated.

X is generaly started by init level 5.
Which runlevel you are getting?
If you are getting runlevel 3 then try init 5 in command prompt
else try startx from your command prompt.
