Not exactly responding your question, but I suggest using another
desktop environment. I suggest WindowMaker, I use it in my desktop
computer, that has 12G mem. I really like the desktop starting in
less than one second, etc.
WindowMaker was written by a Brazilian btw, and afaik is being
maintained by another, for some years already...
