Can we please stick with Virtualbox?
It's free, is open source, and at least we can all stay consistent.
(Sidenote: If you're not on 5.0.6 or later, 5.0.6 fixed a lot of problems.)
i'm on 5.0.10.
and sddm crash also with additions installed.
maybe the culprit is not virtualbox.

Last time I tried vmplayer it had crap support for EFI.
I'm pretty sure Vmware are in dispute with FSF as well so it wouldn't be my vm
of choice.

Qemu? VMware? We seem to have qemu in 2014 repos. Would it be helpful if
switching from VBox to have a gentlemen's agreement to use same virtual
machine?

It's virtualbox issue.
To clear things up. SDDM is using advanced OpenGL features through Qt5. In
case of virtualbox there is a well know issue that after some 4.x version
vbox lost it's ability to properly handle OpenGL (3D acceleration).
Make sure you have installed latest vbox additions, sometimes it helps.
My suggestion (also for myself :) is to use different virtualization tool,
as vbox is becoming dead end.
