Hi, 

I'm not sure why you're getting the error - my father has a M$ keyboard
and mouse and they work fine, same USB ID too. I wonder if there's some
subtle difference in hardware revisions. 

Does the stuff suggested here work?

(you may have to  ssh in from another box or borrow a different keyboard
