Just tried hawaii and it didn't appear to work. When I select it at
login time and enter my password, ti just flashes and returns to the
login screen. I am running real hardware but with intel graphics.

Wayland does not work inside vbox, so you need to install it on real hardware.
I think i'll prepare an ISO with Plasma and Hawaii together as a good start
for something so show on our FOSDEM stand :)
