Thank you for this but what happens if you have a crappy Intel as you primary
and want to plug in a pcie card that need nouveau.
One can turn the Intel card off at the command line but will the nouveau module
then load?
Best,
Colin

This won't disable nouveau, only avoids it's autoloaded (i.e. inserted automatically when the card is detected at PCI level), the nouveau module still can modprobed later. Alternatives could be 2 or 3 entries of blacklisting plus adding special parameter to cmdline to disable at kernel boot (and regenerate the initrds). Of course this is a workaround for people who is not able to play with extra cmdlines or passing as grub options, as the real fix should be in nouveau (which should be made upstream).

To me mostly nouveau crashes with intel and a pretty new nvidia card (either 950M and 960M), and often also interferes with nvidia proprietary drivers (unless you force disabling at cmdline) which leads to always get a black screen at boot.

Just my 2c.

This patch should work as workaround for avoiding nouveau autoloading in
the case of hybrid graphics, where intel card can be used as alternative.
