That's a very long story :) If you want to test other cores take a look at the labs.consol.de packages. There are OMD builds available with Naemon (the real Nagios 4) as core. OMD builds from mathias-kettner.de are only available with Nagios 3.5 in the open source version. Inside the enterprise version there is also the new build core CMC available.
