Check the BIOS and see if it says anything about a floppy. For vmware guests, even if you don't have a virtual floppy configured, the BIOS still shows that a floppy is installed. Most people recommend adding a virtual floppy to work around the issue, but you can also go into the virtual BIOS and change the floppy to not installed, which also allows the installer to work.
