For OmniOS root is a real user (with an empty password by default!) but /etc/default/login has this: # If CONSOLE is set, root can only login on that device. # If the specified device is /dev/console, then root can also log into # any of the currently enabled /dev/vt/# virtual terminal devices. # Comment this line out to allow remote login by root. # CONSOLE=/dev/console so one can only login as root from the console. If the current keyboard device is not associated with /dev/console or a /dev/vt/# device, then it would not be possible to login as root. Ahaa, could that have been the problem when I used another keyboard from the kvm switch? That I changed to a ps2 keyboard from a usb keyboard? That it was not associated with /dev/console?
