The main problem with switching to the new loader seems to be that if anything goes wrong and one wants to use a previous boot environment, special incantations are needed to boot that previous boot environment since only grub knows how to automatically boot from the previous boot environment (the boot environment is tailored for the loader). This adds a risk factor that we were insulated from up to now.
