I’m running LSI 9300-8e for the last 6 months in producution without problems. I have Supermicro JBOD attached to it with SAS drives in it. So, 12Gb/s controller and drives and 6Gb/s backplace.

Perhaps SuperMicro is not eager to re-qualify their existing passive hardware for 12Gb/s since they are mostly intent on selling expander-based hardware which does need to be updated for 12Gb/s.

SAS is supposed to be good for something like 30 feet so only a poorly laid-out passive backplane would have problems due to the higher speed.

Google and WikiPedia were not able to shed any light on this issue so I just took a chance.
