Thanks Mack for both your thoughts and pictures. I’m speaking personally when I say I always, always enjoy hearing from you guys out there. Wish we’d hear from more of you and more often as time permits. I’m just one member of omnisports, but I know I’d like to hear more from you....what you like, what you don’t like, what you would like to see more or less of. So please keep the posts and pictures coming.
Cheers! From: Jamie Mack Sent: Sunday, May 01, 2011 4:12 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [omnisport:14390] Gymnastics "budget cut" rant 1. It is sad to see men's teams being cut. I guess we need to get out and attend those sporting events on campus and donate to support our favorite men's teams. 2. University of Michigan was going to cut their men's gymnastics some years back. They won the next NCAA championship, which gave them a reprieve. As most of you probably know, they also won the 2010 championship. 3. Women athletes were treated terribly in the US before the enactment of Title IX. As we all know, it is difficult to legislate good behavior. Necessary but likely too arbitrary rules frequently have unintended consequences. Budget cuts, PLUS reverse sexism, brings an end to programs such as Cal's gymnastics (and almost baseball). Think about it, only 17 Division 1 schools in the US still have gymnastics. Not too many more than that have wrestling, and a few more swimming and diving. Most of the sports beloved of Omnisport members are being cut. A diversity of mens sports cannot make it in a world where colleges must give an equal number of scholarships to mens and womens sports. Since Football makes all of the money for most schools, and has to give 60 or so scholarships to develop a good team, all other scholarships for men (besides the also popular basketball) are restricted or eliminated. For years there have been quiet drumbeats to include arts scholarships in the total number, since many more women than men receive these. Many more women also would prefer to receive scholarships for performance, art, etc. rather than for womens sports, BUT radical feminists put all their efforts into restricting the scholarship count to sports. So, some schools have womens teams in many sports, without corresponding sports for men, and traditional mens college sports are eliminated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Thu, April 21, 2011 2:23:01 PM Subject: [omnisport:14307] Re: NCAA Gymnastics Update As an annoying footnote to this event, this season may be the last for men's gymnastics at Cal ... a victim of budget cuts (boo hoo).
