CollegeFootball does not have a long season. While other sports stretch from Spring to Fall, or through the entireWinter, Football begin has three or four months to excite our imagination, andto bring us some real sports action. Thisis the opening weekend of College Football in the United States of America, forthe 2018-2019 season. Game schedulesfill the weekend. Often, these openingcontests provide few surprises, with the underdog hardly ever winning over thechampion. It does happen sometimes, and those games can be so fun to watch. Saturdayprovides many such games, with one great and notable exception. The Maize and Gold clad Michigan Wolverineswill play the blue and gold clad Fighting Irish of the University of Notre Damein the showcase game of Saturday evening, the biggest contest of theweekend. This is one of College Football'swierdest rivalries. 125 years or so agothe ND lads learned the new game from the Michigan Boys, and they met ninetimes before Notre Dame finally won a game 11-3. The Michigan team ten refused to play NotreDame for almost 35 years. Thistype of rivalry is what draws may fans to college football. Many of these contests are for honor, andvictory, and making the opponents swallow dust. They are hard fought, sometimesharder fought than championship games. When the players take possession of the trophies which are often handedback and forth, like an old shoe or an old oaken bucket, they doso with great delight, knowing they have bragging rights for the next year.
