The Geelong Cats and the Brisbane Lions played an AMAZING game of Aussie Rules
Football yesterday.  When the four quarters were over, Brisbane snatched the
victory in the last minutes, Geelong valiantly attempted to take points back,
and did, but still lost by one point.  They have also lost the number one
position in the standings; Brisbane, who had been at number two,  has risen to
the top of the ladder.

Today's action pits the number three against the number five.  The fifth placed
Richmond Tigers, who have a winning streak of at least five games, take on the
West Coast Eagles, who also have something of a streak going.  West Coast has
averaged 34 points from stoppages this season (ranked third), while Richmond
has averaged 26 points from this source (ranked fourth-last). Over the past
four weeks, West Coast has averaged 41 points from its clearances (ranked
second).

Meanwhile, in the United States, in Major League Baseball, a few rivalries have
kept the season from entering the August Doldrums.

In the National League, as per usual, the Central Division has remained a place
where bitter rivalries are hard fought throughout the Summer.  At this
particular second, the St. Louis Cardinals are heading the division with .529,
with the Chicago Cubs at .528, and the at this particular moment in time, the
Milwaukee Brewers at one and a half games back (could change tomorrow).  In the
National League East, the Atlanta Braves have a healthy lead of five games over
the Washington Nationals.  In the West, the Los Angeles Dodgers are far out
ahead, as per usual, with  a nineteen game lead over the San Francisco Giants.
They haven't clinched yet, but with numbers like that....

The American League is a place of big winners and big losers.  In the East, the
New York Yankees are, of course, way out in front, leading the Devil Rays by
10.5 games and the Boston Red Sox by 17 games.  Not to worry, the Yankees are
43 games ahead of the last place Baltimore Orioles.  What would the president
say?  In the American League Central, the Minnesota Twins, at .607, are in a
close battle with the Cleveland Indians, who are two games back.  In the West,
the Houston Astros are sitting pretty at .629, leading the Oakland Athletics by
six and a half games.
