Flusing, Queens, was named by the Dutch in honor of Vlissingen, a town in Holland. The name was later anglicized to "Flushing" and the location carried that name into history. Flushing Meadows was the name given to the salt marsh at the mouth of Flushing Creek (nka Flushing River). Corona Park was developed here in the 1930s, to prepare the space for the celebration of the popular 1939 World Fair. It is here where the 1964 World's Fair was also held, at this park established at Flushing Meadows, and the United States Open of Tennis began to be celebrated there annually in 1978. The men's tennis tournament at the U.S. Open began in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1881. Eventually the tournament was expanded to include men's and women's singles and doubles, as well as mixed doubles. When the "Open Era" began in 1968, the tournament allowed professionals for the first time, and eventually the US Open became the final Open of the season. The season began on September 5, 2019 with the NFL Kickoff Game with the Chicago Bears hosting the Green Bay Packers, but today is the real opening day. Hundreds of minutes of glorious football, all contested today! Each week during this centennial season, the NFL has designed a game to recall past glories. Some include past rivals in Super Bowl games of the past, others significant events in leagues history. Thursday's Bears-Packers game was between the oldest extant rivals in the NFL. The 2019 regular season's 256 games will be played over a 17-week schedule. Each of the league's 32 teams will play a 16 game schedule, with one bye week. There will be games on Monday nights and on Thursdays, Including Thursday's National Football League Kickoff game and games on Thanksgiving Day. The regular season will conclude with a full slate of 16 games, and is scheduled for December 29.
