Once you get a shell on the system, is performance still poor? If it is, is anything running that appears to be burning resources? -- Please check prstat for anything consuming large amounts of CPU cycles or memory.
If the system is simply slow to come up initially, the fact that you wait after entering username/pw does not suggest this, have you tried booting verbosely? If you have, is there any place in particular that takes a long time?
