We build on post-SXCE systems all the time but more typically on systems
with 8GB or more memory and 8GB or more in swap.
8GB memory may work fine for a large company with lots of $$$$. But
how should the 'average' notbackedbylargecompany developer pay this?
Or even a student? The situation makes it near impossible to
contribute to ON.
The situation was hardly bearable during SXCE times (because it
blocked a whole machine) and now has become worse, again.
Build systems typically need more memory than the systems they deliver
to. If what you're doing is opensolaris project related, then you
should be able to use an account on the test server farm to building and
testing.
Universities are also often willing to let students use lab systems for
this sort of work if it is somehow related to their studies.
If you can find ways to reduce the memory usage of the build without
measurably increasing build times, I'm certain those contributions would
be welcomed.
