Why those contortions? It would be better if prerequisites to build
pkg-gate would simply be added as dependencies to
developer/opensolaris/pkg5 (I suppose that's the right package for the
job).

Why do we need a GNOME stuff to have the onnv gate built? I am especially
interested in developer/gnome/gettext package. Why isn't the text/gnu-gettext
package sufficient?
Because the pkg(5) gate includes a GUI client. Currently, there isn't a
need to build the GUI client separately (or not at all).
If you'd like to change that, feel free to contribute :)
