=== *Description* ============================================================
Category
    consolidation
Sub-Category
    os-net-pkgs
Description
While performing an SX:CE to Indiana upgrade based on the procedure in
http://blogs.sun.com/edp/entry/moving_from_nevada_and_live, but with a minimized
installation, I came across the following error with the new BE in a mirrored
root pool mounted at /a:
# /a/boot/solaris/bin/update_grub -R /a
Creating GRUB menu in /a
bootadm: failed to open file: /a/etc/release: No such file or directory
bootadm: not using biosdev command for disk: /dev/rdsk/mirror-0.
Installing grub on /dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s1
stage1 written to partition 0 sector 0 (abs 1440)
stage2 written to partition 0, 273 sectors starting at 50 (abs 1490)
Creating GRUB menu in /a
bootadm: failed to open file: /a/etc/release: No such file or directory
bootadm: not using biosdev command for disk: /dev/rdsk/mirror-0.
Installing grub on /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s1
stage1 written to partition 0 sector 0 (abs 16065)
stage2 written to partition 0, 273 sectors starting at 50 (abs 16115)
update_grub in system/kernel needs /etc/release to create the menu entry, but
system/kernellacks a dependency on release/name which provides that file.
Frequency
    Always
Regression
    no
Steps to Reproduce
Install only SUNWcs and SUNWcsd into a new empty BE, add
system/kernel/platform
for /kernel/i86pc, and run update_grub as above.
Expected Result
    update_grub works.
Actual Result
update_grub fails due to missing /etc/release.

=== *Public Comments* ========================================================
As the blog says, its an unsupported way of doing the cross grade from sxce to
OpenSolaris - and hence any issues you might hit while following that procedure
can't be treated as bugs.

Regardless of going from SXCE to OpenSolaris, I don't know of any supported
installation methods that won't include the release/name package.

That doesn't mean this isn't a bug, but I think it reasonably makes it a lower
priority.

While the blog method may be unsupported, there are many supported methods
where you can hit issues like this, such as specifying your own manifests to
the distro constructor or AI, and proper dependencies in packages prevent
customers using those from creating unusable installs like this.
