Steve-
Thanks for these links on the courthouse issue. I'm in favor of moving back
into the courthouse building for reasons that are less about money and more
about the character of the building. This is not a building that was
rundown or on its last legs, from what I could tell. Every time I entered
the building, I was touched by some kind of respect, akin to that for a
cathedral. It seems as though real heart went into the design and building
of that structure. Who knows if the same sentiment would be apparent after
the water damage, but certain features of our town should be protected.
Even if business is conducted differently, or politics change the people in
the offices, that building should be restored as much as possible to its
previous beauty and function.
I respect the opposing ideas as well; I suspect that the people who would
like to erect a new county building are those who appreciate a new house in
Valley Oaks or other subdivision as opposed to the Victorian homes in our
town. A more modern structure, with a better layout, and more efficient use
of energy, certainly has its draw. But that intangible breath of warmth,
power, and wisdom that ran through the halls of the old courthouse are not
often found in modern architecture.
