We moved to the Winona area seven years ago and I was very
disappointed to learn that Winona did not have a Newcomers' Club. We have
moved around quite a bit, and almost every other place we have lived has had a
Newcomers' Club and an associated Welcome Wagon. The club helped us
to get acquainted with other newcomers, and the Welcome Wagon helped us get
acquainted with area businesses. Unfortunately, I do not know how these
were started but, of course, local businesses actually sponsor the Welcome Wagon
and may be responsible for the club, too.
For those who have not had this experience: when new people move
to a community where this service is available, a Welcome Wagon Hostess visits
them, bringing coupons, gifts, and information about area businesses. She
(it is usually a woman but certainly would not have to be) also invites
them to join the Newcomers' Club. Winona truly needs this!!
