[Winona Online Democracy] Winona County Historical Society 160 Johnson Street Winona, Minnesota 55987 One of the world's foremost experts on large rivers and their ecosystems will present an historical, ecological, geological and engineering perspective of the Upper Mississippi River on Wednesday December 13, 2000 at 12:05 p.m. at the Winona County Historical Society 160 Johnson Street, Winona, Minnesota. Dr. Cal Fremling, Distinguished Professor of Biology Emeritus, will present, "Immortal River: The Upper Mississippi River in Ancient and Modern Days." Using slides and commentary he will discuss the history of this great river system beginning 600 million years ago and concluding with the present status of the river. He will discuss the steamboat era, the implementation of various channels from 4.5 feet to nine feet, and the impact of the diesel boats on the river. He will also address current problems that concern the river and its vast ecosystem. Dr. Cal Fremling, a graduate of Iowa State University, is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biology at Winona State University where he taught for 32 years. He has made many scholarly presentations and has published numerous articles and scientific studies. He is recognized as one of the leading experts on large river systems. He has received many honors and awards. In 1988 Governor Rudy Perpich bestowed on Fremling a Public Service Award for his work in environmental and aquatic ecology. The governor cited Fremling's efforts to stop the deterioration of Lake Winona and his contributions to improving the Mississippi River. According to Howard Hoffmaster, then Publisher of the Winona Daily News, "to any person involved with environmental and aquatic ecology, Fremling is the oracle." Fremling also was the recipient of the H. G. "Lefty" Hymes Memorial Award for outstanding service to conservation and the outdoors. In 1999 he received his third Community Achievement Award from the Winona Area Chamber of Commerce. He was praised for his 28 years of unpaid consultant work in behalf of the City of Winona that was responsible for reclaiming Lake Winona. The award affirmed his leadership and persistence, "Fremling was the driving force…he testified as a volunteer expert witness and served on numerous boards."
