One of the cleanest definitions I've heard in comparing the "labels" of
liberal and conservative is this:
A conservative's world view is based on the existence of a "higher
authority," and a liberal's world view is that "we" are the final authority.

Subject: [Winona] What Is A Conservative?
[Winona Online Democracy]
Hello Winona Online Democracy,
A friend recently asked me this question, "what does it mean to be a
conservative?".
I suggested that the question is perhaps best answered by those who
consider themselves to be conservative.
I realize it isn't easy or desirable to reduce a complex world to simple
categories. I like that I probably can't be put into an easy and clear cut
category. Most people probably spill over into many categories.
I also realize there is a diversity among conservatives as there is among
any other group.
Would anyone be willing to share what being a conservative means to them?
I'll pass the responses on to my friend.
Occasionaly, it's good to review what certain words and labels mean as the
times change.
Thank you,
Dwayne Voegeli
