[Winona Online Democracy]

I don't know the answer to this, but it is worth consideration.  What 
percentage of the 14 year olds in the U.S. were graduating from 8th grade in 
1895?  This is an issue that is rarely mentioned when comparing US test 
scores with those of other countries.  When lamenting how far behind our 
seniors are in science compared to other nations, remember that the U.S. has 
put a priority on giving everyone a general education while in many other 
countries students are entering apprenticeships or technical schools or 
university level schools at age 16.

I would also encourage those of you with children in school to look at a 
test or pull out some of your own from years past.  How many questions can 
you still answer?
