[Winona Online Democracy]

There is so much I would like to say on all of this, I'm not sure where to
start.
First, the united way did the right thing. It is illegal in the united
states to discriminate against anyone, no matter sexual preference, race,
religion and so on. We all know how it goes. I know that the courts have
said that the scouts can legally discriminate, but that still does not make
it morally right. If the scouts are teaching boys to discriminate, they are
in the wrong; no matter what any court says. Discrimination is wrong no
matter who you are. It's really sad that the people of Winona want to allow
discrimination to continue. I know several gay people in this town that
hold very prestigious jobs and people would be shocked if they find out who
they are; and unfortunately, they have to stay hidden because they know what
would happen if people knew about them. Example: would you want a gay man
teaching your children in school? There are several gay men in our school
district and they are doing a wonderful job. They don't teach about their
sexual preferences just like heterosexuals don't teach about theirs. I
think it's time that the people of Winona wake up to reality along with the
rest of the world. There is nothing wrong with being gay and if a group
such as the scouts have a problem with it, we need to change the way we
treat the scouts. I have stopped all contributions to the scouts years ago,
and that includes purchasing items they have for sale. I won't allow my son
to become a scout, because of their stand on gays. We have a gay member in
our family and my family is also of a different race than most in Winona and
I have taught my children to love all people no matter what, and they do not
understand why the people of Winona are so hateful to people that are
different than themselves.
If you agree with the scouts stand, then I feel sorry for you and your
family; but that is your choice and I will not harass you as some are
harassing the united way. If you agree with the united way, then I applaud
you for having an open mind and heart and for not being afraid of what is
different from yourself.
I will stop now because this is a topic that I could continue on forever.
If anyone doesn't understand the laws pertaining to discrimination, please
contact the local human rights commission. I know that anyone of the
members would love to explain the laws to you.
