[Winona Online Democracy]
It has been asked by the board of the local United Way --"Did we do the
right thing?"
My question is by what standard do you/they/I determine "the right thing"?
A relative standard based on popular culture is a poor measure.
The United Way has every right to make decisions based on their values. The
Boy Scouts have that same right to make decisions based on their values.
The "mantra of tolerance" says to accept all and all their values. Both the
UW and the BSA have shown intolerance to another's values. Actually we ALL
do the same in our filter of determining what we believe to be "good or bad"
values. We all attempt to influence others towards what we believe to be
good for them, us or society as a whole. Only charge BSA with intolerance
if you do so for UW. Personally I am pleased to be called intolerant of
what I believe to be negative for society and the individual.
Perhaps each organization could be commended for taking a stand, although
controversial, based on it's own system of beliefs or values. Now, it is
the responsibility of each of us as individuals to decide which
organization, with divergent values on the promotion of men engaged in a
sexual act with other men, deserves our support.
>From both views points, it is likely a clear choice.
Boy Scouts of America, stand tall. I salute you.
