[Winona Online Democracy] Winona County Historical Society 160 Johnson Street Winona, Minnesota 55987 Dr. Thomas Mauszycki will present, "The Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad v The Coal Industry" in the May Murray Education Center of the Winona County Historical Society on Wednesday April 4 at 12:05 p.m. Dr. Mauszycki is a graduate of Winona State University and the University of Minnesota, School of Dentistry. He practiced dentistry in Winona for thirty years. He is an avid student of railroading. This presentation is based upon a paper he presented recently. Dr. Mauszycki's presentation will provide information and context for the current controversy regarding the proposal made by the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad to compete with the Burlington Northern and the Union Pacific Railroads. At the present time the Burlington Northern and the Union Pacific are the two major railroads serving the Powder River Basin of Wyoming and Montana and transporting coal eastward to Minnesota. The DM&E wants to join them. The number of trains transporting coal through Winona will increase whether or not the Surface Transportation Board approves or denies the DM&E's application to expand its operations. The demand for electrical power is constantly increasing and the primary fuel used to generate electricity is sub-bituminous coal. The Powder River Basin of Wyoming and Montana is the largest source of this coal in the United States. "The Powder River Basin of Wyoming and Montana has 250 to 300 years of coal supply at current rates of use." Railroads are the most efficient and economical mode of transportation. The public is invited to bring their lunch or to order a Blue Heron Coffee House box lunch through the society. Call 454-2723 before Noon Tuesday April 3 for selections and prices. ---------------- This message was posted to the Winona Online Democracy Project.
