[Winona Online Democracy] In addition to comments from Joanie Heydt-nelson and Dwayne Voegeli, I also want to express concern about the recent layoff notices given to teaching staff in Winona public schools. This is not only a matter of who will or will not get called back eventually. Even staff who think they have a good chance of being re-hired often need to protect themselves and begin looking elsewhere. I know at least one teacher who is in that situation, and this is someone who is licensed in a hard-to-find area. In other words, many of those who could eventually be re-hired may have already found jobs elsewhere by the time the decision is finally made. One more example of how dysfunctional the timing is between the Legislature's budget process and the timeline the district needs to follow. And what a travesty this latest round of "Do More with Less" thinking is for teachers, students and families. Frankly, I have to wonder how many teachers around the state will be spending time this summer researching alternative career options!
