Thank you Duane for the comments to Chris Nelson's post.  I really struggle with the anger that seems to be prevalent in his and Andrew's comments.

Our system may not be perfect and I don't think democracy is even considered by anyone to be perfect, but it is better than any other system around.   Another truism is that 90 % of the laws, rules, etc are made to deal with the  10% of the people who decide to break rules, laws or disregard peoples rights, beliefs or concerns.

For a lot of people, it is automatic that you are wrong if you don't believe the same way they do.

Another problem is that there are people everywhere and around every issue that will sit around and complain but won't actively work to change things.  "Oh, I wouldn't know what to do" or "Oh, I couldn't get involved, it might cause me embarrassment, cost me money or time, etc etc etc."

It is wrong to argue that any one thing (rules, searches, etc) did or did not cause an action or prevent an action. (eg. carry a gun to school)  It is really a combination of things PLUS an individual's reaction to anyone of those things that causes change in behavior.   There is a heck of a lot more gray answers to these issues than black or white answers.
