Although widening of streets is occasionally warranted due to safety, or
addition of bikeways etc., we have no agenda to do so as standard operation
during the street reconstruction projects. The City Council has wisely
allocated $500,000 per year to use in the much needed repair of some of the
city's older and more deteriorated streets. That reconstruction will
generally consist of replacement of the surface, aggregate base layer, as
well as the curb and gutter only if it is required. Each street will be
individually reviewed. Some conditions will require the loss of mature
trees. We then do our best to replace with a greater number of young trees.

It is my understanding that the multi-year street rebuilding project that
will take place mainly on the east end, but likely to spread further,
entails widening. Not a lot, just enough to get rid of the mature bouvliard
trees. Also, my street, which is narrower than usual, is a source of
frustration to drivers who wish to go faster.
