I believe that those who participate in this forum need to understand their purpose in doing so. First, do you want to express an opinion, persuade, or argue? If it is to persuade, then then one needs to carefully consider the audience to whom you are writing, and that means employing a tone which will not alienate that audience. Who is the audience here online? It is difficult to know because in addition to the "regulars," there are many people who tend to read the posts and not contribute. I don't believe that anyone needs to be dishonest about his or her views or use a simpler vocabulary--dumbing things down is not one of my priorities, but maintaining a civil discussion here is. I know that it is possible to disagree with each other, and even to express anger, without vilifying another writer. Again, I would ask, "Is it more important to be right, or is it more important to express a viewpoint which doesn't alienate those whom you would like to persuade, and, as a result, help them see the issue in another light, or even persuade them ?"
