Correct. However the reason why gmane is "mangling" email addresses is
due to the way that the gmane feed is set up:

'Encode         encrypt' is checked.
That means that 'Encrypt addresses':
http://gmane.org/subscribe.php

is checked on the subscribe form.

That can easily be undone/modified by the person responsible for the
initial subscribe at:
