They had removed the text boundaries and got a lot of complaints. Current state there is, to show the complete text boundaries, when "show non-printing characters" is on, and show corner marks, when it is off. See https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46073 and its duplicates and the discussion on mailing list and in forum.
