I was able to replicate the claim he made about Excel reporting that the file has errors. My exact steps are the same as his. -I would go and create a new .ods file and save it to the desktop. -Then I would end task soffice.exe/bin in task manager. -Afterward, I would open the file I just created and it would come up in recovery manager. -I would continue through it and the file would work fine afterward. I did this a few times with different data in the files including no data as in the original and still couldn't reproduce the error in OO.
