Sorry, Paul, OpenOffice.org (the past version) and current plans for
Apache OpenOffice (the future version) do not support running on an iPad
currently. As noted, LibreOffice (a similar office suite) has announced
plans for a potential future iPad version, but it's not available now in
production.
Best practice for users@ lists is to provide either helpful answers, or
potentially useful links to other user questions. Commentary on choice
of tool or device is rarely helpful.

Exactly. I have one that was given to me as a gift, and that is a
very good description. And while it is "glorified", it's not even
very good, e.g. can't view Flash video and the Safari browses is
rudimentary at best.
A low-end small laptop is much more useful.
