@James,

Interesting ...

I uninstalled LibreOffice 3.5.2.2 and installed 3.5.3.2 to have an install that
was after the Apache OpenOffice 3.4 install.

Libre Office 3.5.3.2 did claim the defaults of the ODF-format
file-associations. *BUT* it left the associations for OpenOffice.org Writer,
Calc, etc. (all leading to Apache OpenOffice 3.4.0). It also seems to have
*ADDED* associations for .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, etc., for itself, but
without changing the defaults or removing any other associations. It also left
the soffice.exe association (identified as LibreOffice 3.5) that I had created
earlier, but I really don't need it now.

Finally, I was not offered a dialog about making the Microsoft Office products
the defaults at all, perhaps because associations already existed. I don't
know, but I like how it worked.

Is that cool or what?

I have found another way. Change the OpenOffice files to owriter etc.
This way, OpenOffice Writer is displayed, instead of just OpenOffice.org
3.4, when right clicking. Perhaps creating a shortcut there may work too.
