So that, when the number of fractional places is fixed (even perhaps to none), similarly significant digits align vertically. All the units digits are vertically aligned, that is - and likewise the tens and hundreds and tenths and hundredths, and so on. For the same reason, digits are usually of constant width even in fonts which have variable-width characters.
